What If You’re Wrong

By bk | September 16, 2007 20:57

This bubbled up on Digg today, and I had almost forgotten about this portion of Dawkins’ talk at Randolph-Macon. So often non-theists are put on the defensive of trying to explain why we don’t believe, and the real question is why one should believe! There is no reason that a person should be expected to believe in any unseen being by default, much less worship said unseen being. There is a need to have some extraordinary reasons why this mystical unseen thing is worthy of my devotion.

The other element that is particularly excellent it Dawkins’ clear and succinct argument about the default nature of most people’s religion, it is a relatively small group who have actually chosen a belief system - most are following along with some basic variant of what they grew up with. This is clearlyl one of the main ways the religious meme spreads, and an important method for the survival of the meme.

I highly recommend the full version of the presentation (last time I checked it had been taken down) if you can find it. It is always a treat to see Dawkins speak, he presents with such clarity and logical strength opponents usually end up resorting to ad hominem and non sequitur.
