Why do we have ugly people (among other less pleasant things)

A post on Newsweek about evolution that doesn’t suck! I’m happily surprised.
Why Doesn’t Evolution Get Rid of Ugly People? takes a look at one potential reason that seemingly undesirable traits persist. In short, a gene that provides an unfavorable trait for one sex might be favorable for the other.
I’m not an evolutionary biologist, and if this really is a reasonable explanation (seems plausible), then I’m glad it’s getting in to the (mass) media. Average Americans need to see examples of how evolution can explain what we see today. I think this is the most likely way to reach greater acceptance of evolution.
