Religious Literacy

By bk | May 13, 2007 19:44

Friendly Atheist has a good post about religious literacy, which is something I think is very important. I don’t want to repeat all of the points here, but let’s just say that one does not need to believe in to be educated about a topic - in fact the non-believers are often the most well educated, that extended understanding is the reason why many of us do not believe.

Karen Armstrong was one of the early and influential authors for me. Specifically A History of God, which was one of the books I read that really, truly helped me realize that religion is a social, cultural construct - something that does not exist independent of our human, cultural context - I came to the realization that God is not real, that man created God in his own image, not the other way around.
